Looking for a Good Romance Story? Look No Further than a Musical

By Jennifer Williams

Good romance stories are hard to come by these days. Many of them are formulaic, and because they leave nothing to the imagination, there is no hint of mystery. Luckily, all one has to do is look to musical theatre for a good romance story.

Romance Story #1: The King and I

This is a great show to see live, or to rent, as the classic 1956 version with Yul Brynner is readily available on DVD. This Rogers and Hammerstein musical tells the romance story of Anna, a British schoolteacher, and the King of Siam. Anna comes to Siam to teach the king’s children. Although they are from two different worlds, there is an unspoken attraction between them. This is a musical about changing times and repressed love, and is a must-see for anyone who wants to see a unique romance story.

Romance Story #2: The Sound of Music

This is a popular musical to see live, but it is most often seen on DVD, as few can imagine anyone but Julie Andrews in the main role. This musical, also by Rodgers and Hammerstein, is the story of Maria, who comes to be a governess to Captain von Trapp’s children. The children still grieve the loss of their mother, and Captain von Trapp runs his home strictly. Can Maria sing her way into the Captain’s heart? This is both an uplifting musical, and one that is serious, as it also mentions the Nazi occupation of Austria.

Romance Story #3: RENT

For those people who want to see a modern musical romance story, Jonathan Larson’s musical RENT is still quite popular. This is the story of a homosexual couple, a lesbian couple, and a straight couple struggling to make their way as artists in New York during the AIDS epidemic that plagued the artistic community during the mid-1990s. This musical is both poignant and romantic, so much so that Jonathan Larson posthumously won the Pulitzer Prize.
