In Historical Romance Boy-Meets-Girl Themes Are Common

By Jennifer Williams

One may meander through the years that have gone by and find many interesting historical romance writers as well as novelists who give the reader a taste of what it was like to live and love in times gone by. Set in different periods of history, there are tales of love that reflect on the times, places and events of by-gone eras and transports the reader into scenarios much unlike what we know today.

Profound Impact Or Indifference

The impact of historical romance stories on present day lives could be profound or merely cursory and depends on how the reader perceives the different lifestyles and the effect of such lifestyles on their own beliefs and perceptions. One could be moved by the emotions, trials and tribulations of the heroes and heroines of bygone times and these stories may help the reader to draw lessons from such events.

It does not matter where life takes the reader on the journey through time, the romantic journey would always hold lessons for the reader and historical romance can help expand the horizons about different people, places and times in their journey through life. However, the typical historical romance story goes something like boy meets girl and they fall in love followed by conflict and intrigue and a happy ending.

The historical romance writer must have his characters do the right thing for the story or era and may require more than two dimensional plots. Since romance is a character-driven genre it requires the characters be clearly defined and the stories compelling, all of which makes for a good historical romantic novel.

The historical romance novel should include detailed descriptions of the clothing of the period as well as use words that were common to the period of time that is being depicted. Historical romance stories can span time periods as well as countries or different parts of the world and include everything from the dark ages through medieval times. They can also continue through the renaissance period and include everything up to the turn of the century such as 1890-1914.

Even though one may expect all historical romances to be similar in their styles that is not the case. There are numerous scenarios, even in the boy-meet-girl plots. and there is as much scope in changing settings, characters in historical romance as there is in mystery writing.
